The Best Associate's in Accounting Programs for 2026

The best associate's in accounting programs for 2026 span a tuition range from $1,104 a year at Irvine Valley College to $58,260 a year at Rochester Institute of Technology, and that gap is the first thing to understand before picking a school. We scored 774 accounting programs on graduation rate, admissions selectivity, cost, and outcomes data pulled from IPEDS and BLS records to build the Hakia Score behind this ranking. The average graduation rate across the ranked set is 54%, so a program that clears 60% or more is already outperforming its peers.
Cost is not a straight line here. Public colleges dominate the top of the list, and the cheapest strong option, Irvine Valley College, ranks second overall at a Hakia Score of 96.5 while charging $1,104 a year in-state, about $92 a month spread across twelve months. Two private nonprofit programs crack the top 25, Rochester Institute of Technology at rank 3 and Ultimate Medical Academy at rank 7; RIT's $58,260 in-state tuition runs more than 50 times Irvine Valley College's rate for the same associate credential. Neither approach is wrong; the math below shows what each one actually costs over two years and what that buys.
What follows covers what accounting programs cost and how the cheapest options compare to the priciest, the licensure path that follows an associate degree, the accreditation that separates a credible accounting degree from a diploma-mill one, why an associate's is the right first step for many students instead of jumping straight to a bachelor's, and how online accounting programs stack up against on-campus ones. Every figure below ties back to the same federal IPEDS dataset, not to marketing copy from any single school.

- 68% graduation rate
- $1,395 in-state tuition
- Hakia Score 97.7
- Certificate of Achievement offered online
De Anza's accounting department offers three separate credentials rather than a single degree path. A Certificate of Achievement prepares students for an entry-level accounting position; a more advanced Certificate of Achievement-Advanced targets professional roles such as staff accountant or analyst; and an Associate in Arts in Accounting is built specifically for transfer to a four-year school as an accounting major. The Certificate of Achievement is also available in an online format, per the program's degree page.
De Anza takes the #1 spot in this ranking with a Hakia Score of 97.7, driven by a 68% graduation rate, the second-highest of the four programs here. In-state tuition runs $1,395 a year; students paying the out-of-state rate face $12,420, nearly 9 times as much. De Anza enrolls 17,425 students, the second-largest school in this group behind College of the Canyons. The AA track suits a student who already knows they want a bachelor's in accounting and wants to bank the core coursework at community-college prices before transferring.

- Problem-based accounting curriculum
Irvine Valley's AS in Accounting is built as a transfer pipeline, not a terminal credential. The program page describes its financial and managerial accounting courses as "problem based," meant to prepare students for upper-division rigor after transfer, and the sample academic plan runs 63-64 units across four semesters of full-time study.
Beyond the AS, the department runs a stack of shorter credentials: a Certificate of Achievement requiring 20 units over two years part-time, and five Certificates of Proficiency covering computerized accounting, financial accounting, income tax, and payroll, each completable in about a year part-time.
IVC's Hakia Score of 96.5 places it second in this ranking, built on a 57% graduation rate and tuition that ties for the lowest in-state rate of any school on this list: $1,104 a year, versus $11,808 out-of-state, a gap of nearly $10,700. The program lists direct transfer agreements on assist.org with Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara, and its page notes that CPA licensure itself requires 150 semester units, a bachelor's degree plus 30 more, so this AS is a starting point rather than a finish line.

- Required paid co-op via NTID
RIT's Accounting Technology AAS is run through the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and is designed for qualified deaf and hard of hearing students. It comes in two versions: a career-focused AAS that leads directly into paraprofessional accounting jobs, and an Associate+Bachelor's Degree Program that lets a student who holds a 2.5 GPA or higher move straight into RIT's School of Individualized Study for a bachelor's degree. The curriculum runs 75 credit hours across three years and covers the full accounting cycle for service, merchandising, and manufacturing businesses; every student also completes a paid cooperative education placement before graduating, typically scheduled after the second year.
RIT posts a 70% graduation rate, the highest of the four programs here, and a 67% admit rate, the only school on this list selective enough to report one. That combination earns it a Hakia Score of 96.5, third in this ranking. The tradeoff is cost: tuition runs $58,260 a year with no in-state discount, more than 40 times what De Anza charges its in-state students. RIT's page notes that 100% of incoming first-year and transfer students receive some form of aid and that actual cost typically runs below the published sticker price, but a prospective student should budget against the full $58,260 figure until an aid offer says otherwise.

- Separate Technician vs. transfer AS tracks
College of the Canyons splits its accounting offerings into two distinct AS and Certificate of Achievement tracks. The transfer-focused Accounting track requires 22-23 units: Principles of Accounting I and II at 5 units each, Business Law at 3 units, and 9-10 units chosen from macroeconomics, microeconomics, or statistics. The separate Accounting Technician track requires 20 units, built around Bookkeeping and Accounting, Entrepreneurial Finance, and Business Law, with electives in Business English or QuickBooks Pro, a path for students who want bookkeeping-level skills without the full transfer sequence.
Canyons earns a Hakia Score of 95, fourth in this group, on a 45% graduation rate, the lowest of the four schools here. Tuition stays cheap regardless: $1,104 a year in-state, identical to Irvine Valley, against $10,896 out-of-state, nearly 10 times as much. With 18,075 students enrolled, Canyons is the largest school in this group. It suits a student who wants to test bookkeeping or entry-level accounting work through the Technician track before committing to the longer transfer-degree path.

College of San Mateo's Associate in Arts in Accounting is a 23.5-unit core built for both transfer and quick employability. Students take Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and two dedicated QuickBooks courses (Set-up and Service Business, then Payroll and Merchandising Business), plus a Spreadsheets course and six units of accounting or business electives. The program points students to the state's Assist course-articulation tool to map lower-division accounting and business coursework for transfer into the CSU and UC systems, and pairs the degree with standalone certificates in Accounting Assistant, Enrolled Agent Exam Preparation, and Tax Preparer I and II for students who want a credential before finishing all 60 units.
The numbers back the fit for cost-conscious transfer students. California residents pay $1,288 a year, versus $11,384 for out-of-state students, nearly a 9-to-1 gap that makes non-resident enrollment a poor deal here. 61% of students graduate, and Hakia's ranking model, which weighs outcomes like graduation rate against cost and access, scores the program at 94.9, good for 5th among 2026's top associate's accounting programs nationally. With 9,901 students enrolled campuswide, this fits someone who wants low-cost, transfer-ready accounting training rather than a narrow professional certificate.

Foothill's AA in Accounting is structured around California's CPA licensure pipeline: the program page states all its courses meet the CPA unit requirement, and directs students toward the Accounting 67 and 68 series specifically to prepare for the Enrolled Agent exam. Beyond the AA, the department offers a stack of narrower certificates built off the same coursework: four separate CPA Exam Preparation certificates (Audit, Business Environment and Concepts, Financial Accounting Reporting, and Regulation), plus Bookkeeping, Tax Specialist, Payroll Preparation, and Accounting Ethics certificates. The program page also states the AA can be completed fully online.
Foothill's 56% graduation rate and 94.4 Hakia Score put it 6th among 2026's top associate's accounting programs, just behind College of San Mateo. In-state tuition runs $1,395 against $12,420 for out-of-state students, an 8.9-to-1 gap. Enrollment across the college is 12,949 students. This program suits someone targeting California CPA or Enrolled Agent licensure specifically, since the curriculum is built around those unit requirements rather than a general transfer track.

The 165-credit, 18-month online curriculum runs Principles of Accounting I and II, Accounting Software Applications, Cost Accounting, and Payroll Accounting alongside healthcare-specific coursework: Medical Terminology, Introduction to Diagnostic and Procedural Coding, Optimizing the Reimbursement Cycle, and Healthcare Settings, Claim Cycle, and Claims Processing. UMA states plainly that graduates are not prepared to sit for the CPA exam; the program targets entry-level roles like patient services representative, revenue billing specialist/claims analyst, and insurance benefits specialist, and caps class sizes at 25 students.
55% of UMA students graduate, and the program earns a 94.4 Hakia Score, matching Foothill's score but placing 7th among 2026's top associate's accounting programs, with 8,932 students enrolled across the school. UMA runs rolling admissions with new classes starting every 2 to 3 weeks rather than fixed semester start dates, and its program page states the school carries institutional accreditation through the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). This fits someone set on healthcare-sector accounting and billing work specifically, not a stepping stone to a CPA license.

What Associate's in Accounting Programs Cost, and What the ROI Actually Is
Accounting programs at the associate level cost dramatically different amounts depending on control type. Among the 774 accounting programs scored for this ranking, in-state tuition runs from $1,104 a year at Irvine Valley College and College of the Canyons to $58,260 a year at Rochester Institute of Technology, a private nonprofit, per IPEDS data. Multiply the annual sticker price by two years and the gap becomes concrete: a two-year associate degree costs about $2,208 in tuition at Irvine Valley College versus roughly $116,520 at Rochester Institute of Technology, a difference of $114,312.
Set that $114,312 gap against the $54,920 national median annual salary BLS reports for the field, and the cheaper path pays for itself immediately: $2,208 is about 4% of one year's salary, while the pricier private-school route would take roughly 2.1 years of that same national median salary just to close the tuition gap, before counting a single dollar earned. That does not make the private option a bad choice; Rochester Institute of Technology's program carries a different scope and campus experience. It does mean the extra cost has to be justified by something beyond the credential itself.
Most of the top 25 accounting programs are public colleges charging well under $5,000 a year in-state: Fox Valley Technical College, Chippewa Valley Technical College, and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College all sit at $4,485, Gaston College in North Carolina charges $2,432, and Georgia's Southern Crescent Technical College and Central Georgia Technical College both charge $2,568. Out-of-state and online students should check each school's non-resident rate separately, since these figures reflect in-state tuition only.
CPA Licensure After an Associate Degree in Accounting
An associate degree in accounting does not, by itself, qualify a graduate to sit for the CPA exam. Every U.S. state board requires roughly 150 semester hours of college credit to license a Certified Public Accountant, about 30 hours beyond a standard four-year bachelor's degree, and the AICPA confirms this 150-hour rule is set state by state through each board of accountancy. A two-year associate degree, typically 60 to 70 credits, covers roughly the first half of that path.
What an associate degree does is open entry-level bookkeeping, accounts-payable, and accounting-clerk roles, and it builds the transfer credits most students need to finish a bachelor's degree and eventually a CPA track. Students who plan to sit for the CPA exam should confirm, before enrolling, that their associate program's accounting and business courses transfer intact into a four-year accounting degree; several community colleges on this list, including De Anza College and Foothill College, publish transfer agreements with in-state public universities for exactly this reason.
Accreditation That Actually Matters for an Accounting Associate's Degree
Accreditation works differently at the associate level than it does for a four-year accounting degree. Every program in this ranking holds regional or national institutional accreditation, the baseline the U.S. Department of Education tracks through IPEDS and the minimum needed for federal financial aid eligibility and credit transfer. That is table stakes, not a differentiator between accounting programs.
The accreditation that matters more once a student transfers into a bachelor's program is AACSB accreditation, a business-specific standard granted to a select share of business schools. An associate program without AACSB accreditation is not automatically a problem, since AACSB typically accredits the four-year or graduate business school a student transfers into, not the two-year feeder program itself. Check the transfer destination's accreditation, not just the associate program's, before assuming credits will count cleanly toward a CPA-track accounting degree.
Associate's vs. Bachelor's: The Right Level for an Accounting Degree
An associate degree is a two-year credential, typically 60 to 70 credit hours, sitting below a bachelor's degree and above a standalone certificate on the accounting credential ladder. This ranking focuses on the associate level specifically because it is the fastest, cheapest entry point into accounting work, and because tuition data at this level is the most directly comparable across public institutions, which is where 23 of the top 25 accounting programs here are based.
A certificate in bookkeeping or accounting-clerk work can take a year or less but caps out at lower-paid roles and does not stack toward CPA eligibility on its own. A bachelor's degree, by contrast, is the level most CPA-track students actually need, since it typically supplies most of the 150 credit hours state boards require. The associate degree is best understood as the middle step: cheaper and faster than starting a bachelor's from year one, and built to transfer, provided a student checks the transfer agreement before enrolling.
Graduation rates make the tradeoff visible. Among the ranked accounting programs, De Anza College posts the highest completion rate at 68%, while several open-admission community colleges finish students at 45% to 49%. A lower completion rate is not automatically a red flag at an open-access public college; it often reflects part-time and working students taking longer, not necessarily program quality, but it is a number worth asking each school to explain.
Online Associate's in Accounting Programs and Accelerated Tracks
Online accounting programs are common at the associate level because coursework in financial accounting, managerial accounting, payroll, and tax prep transfers well to a remote format, and because most associate-degree students are working adults fitting classes around a job. The IPEDS data used to build this ranking does not flag delivery format directly, so treat fully online as a feature to confirm with each school's admissions office rather than something guaranteed by a high Hakia Score.
What the data does show is that public colleges, which hold 23 of the top 25 spots in this ranking, commonly build evening, hybrid, and online sections into their accounting programs for working students. That flexibility is part of why these public accounting programs post the tuition figures they do: $1,104 to $9,492 a year in-state among the public colleges in the top 25, without the overhead a private campus like Rochester Institute of Technology carries.
The tradeoff with an accelerated or fully online track is pacing, not price. A part-time online student stretching an associate degree across three or four years pays the same per-credit rate as a full-time on-campus student but takes longer to reach a paycheck; the 45% to 49% graduation rates posted by several open-admission community colleges on this list, including Pasadena City College and Saddleback College, partly reflect that slower, part-time path rather than program quality.
Accounting Salary and Job Outlook: National Context
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a national median annual salary of $54,920 for the field, a figure that applies across the country and does not vary by which of these accounting programs a graduate attended; no school on this list, however well ranked, changes that national baseline on its own. See the full breakdown at the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and detailed wage tables at BLS OEWS.
An associate degree in accounting is a practical way into that field at entry level: accounting clerk, bookkeeper, accounts-payable or accounts-receivable specialist, and payroll-assistant roles routinely accept a two-year accounting degree as the required credential. Graduates who want the CPA designation eventually still need the additional coursework covered in the licensure section above, but the associate credential is the fastest, cheapest path into paid accounting work.
Employers filling entry-level roles generally care more about a completed, accredited associate degree in accounting than about which of the 774 accounting programs analyzed here a candidate attended. The Hakia Score differences between rank 1 and rank 25 reflect graduation rate, cost, and selectivity, not job-placement guarantees this dataset does not measure directly.

Our Methodology for Ranking Associate's in Accounting Programs
Every program earns a Hakia Score from 0 to 100, built only from federal data (IPEDS, the U.S. Department of Education, and BLS) and scored against its true peers: programs in the same field at the same degree level. No reputation surveys, no pay-to-play. Here is how the score is weighted:
- Outcomes44%
Graduation rate (26%) and real per-school graduate earnings (18%). Does the program get students to the finish line, and where do they land?
- Selectivity & academics38%
Admissions selectivity (24%) and the academic profile of admitted students (14%).
- Scale & value18%
Enrollment (7%), cost-to-earnings value (6%), and the number of graduates a program produces (5%).
Weights renormalize over the data each program actually reports, so a school missing a metric (many open-access colleges do not publish entrance scores or earnings) is never penalized for it. Scores are percentiles within the peer group, curved to a 0-to-100 scale. What the score does not measure: individual instructor quality, specific course content, or campus culture. Verify those directly with the program.
